So basically, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but mounted battleship-style in threes or even fours (a pair would be enough, though), firing either proprietary or 16-20 inch smart rounds. Coupled with the best ordnance guiding system around (find it to me please) and a basic auto-loading mechanism. Will it work and wickedly? And where?

I'm just picturing a full broadside of nine of these going over the horizon. Some poor bastard's gonna have a very bad day.

I would think that the intense magnetic fields would interfere with each other and even if you could shield them, I don't know if you could power them adequately. Furthermore, I believe that as the rounds get larger in diameter, it would be much harder to fling them down range at mach 10. However, because of design of the gun, reloading could be significantly faster than conventional navel guns like on the Missouri and instead of making the bore bigger, they could just shoot faster. This is coming from an exhausted undergrad Biologist, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

Hmmm...hybrid rail/conventional with 10-16 inch rounds? Yeah, that'd be nice. I'd trade a big round for faster rate of fire and more rounds I can store.

It's BAE Systems . They're a defense and weapons company based in Britain, and they came from the company that made the Spitfire warplane.

And there's more. From their Wiki page:

BAE Systems plays a significant role in the production of military equipment. In 2008, 95% of BAE Systems' total sales were military related.

It plays important roles in military aircraft production. The company's Typhoon fighter and Tornado fighter-bomber are both front line aircraft of the RAF. The company is a major partner in the F-35 Lightning II programme. Its Hawk advanced jet trainer aircraft has been widely exported. [104] In July 2006, the British government declassified the HERTI (High Endurance Rapid Technology Insertion), an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which can navigate autonomously.

BAE Systems Land and Armaments manufactures the M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicle family, the US Navy Advanced Gun System (AGS), the M113 armoured personnel carrier (APC), the M109 Paladin , the British Army's Challenger II , Warrior Tracked Armoured Vehicle , M777 howitzer and the Panther Command and Liaison Vehicle

Major naval projects include the Astute class nuclear submarine, Type 45 air defense destroyer and Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier.

There you go.

Maybe I should of been more specific in my surprise. I'm just surprised that the US military would outsource this sort of weapon and I'm even more surprised that my government would allow it to be exported. I've played enough Ace Combat games to know railguns are really handy at shooting planes out of the sky and considering the whole Island defence strategy of the modernisation program you would think they would start by bolting these on to Royal Navy ships.

The majority of US military weapon systems are outsourced, maybe even all of them.

AWESOME! I've always wanted a railgun! Just smaller like Fortune's in Metal Gear Solid 2!

There's a lot of cross pollination. In fact, many of the contracts BAE get say X% of the design must be designed and built by subs in the US (same for Raytheon, Lockheed, etc having to design and build Y% of stuff in the UK).
